Baby you're a firework

It has been two weeks since I saw Katy Perry live and yes, I am still obsessed with all things Katy! I absolutely adore her personality, style, and of course her music. In particular the song 'Firework' it actually sometimes brings tears to my eyes! I've said that my 'Inspired by' blogs won't always be about celebrities, I'll stick to the theme of music but I'd love for song, genre, even band suggestions. This month I am inspired by Katy Perry's song 'Firework' and the message it portrays. I recently saw this video of Katy Perry playing 'Firework' at the Radio 1 Teen choice awards in London, when introducing the song Katy has tears in her eyes and thanks everyone for their support because the song means the world to her, in my mind that just cements the meaning of the song and the importance of the message it portrays through the lyrics.

“You don't have to feel like a waste of space, You're original cannot be replaced. If you only knew what the future holds, out of a hurricane comes a rainbow”. This song to me is about embracing life and not being afraid to be proud of what and who you are and to stand tall and proud and show your true colours. It's about accepting who you are and embracing that, work what you have and be confident because that is when your true beauty will shine. So remember 'baby you're fireworks, come and show them what you're worth, make them go oh, oh as you shoot across the sky'.

To me a 'Firework outfit' is the outfit that truly represents YOU it doesn't matter if it's not a latest trend or a flashy pricey outfit. It's that unique outfit that shows a little about the person you are and when wearing it you feel a million dollars! My “Firework outfit” staple item is the Vinyl Waistband Tunic. I absolutely LOVE it! I blogged about it in a previous post and I really don't want to take it off. I'm conscious of my arms so to make me really feel a million dollars I like to add a Jacket or Bolero to give me that extra confidence. The Pleather Biker Jacket makes me feel like a Rock n Roll Queen I feel so confident, and truly myself when I wear it. The military Bolero I am wearing in the 2ND photo is part of the Miss Military collection and I always wear it! It is the perfect length and defines my smaller waist. Another staple item for me is a pair of Leggings they always give me that extra inch of confidence and means I can wear some of the shorter tunics and still feel fantastic! Anyone who knows me well knows that I rarely go out without a cute necklace and hair bow they are my 'statement pieces'. The best part about having a 'Firework' outfit is the fact that it doesn't have to be what your friends are wearing or a fully glam outfit it can be as simple as a pair of jeans and a jumper, it's that outfit that you always go to when you aren't feeling yourself, it represents you. I always love reading the comments on the facebook page and seeing how excited the customers get when they find an outfit that truly represents them and helps them feel a million dollars. Here is two versions of my Firework outfit. What do you think?

My firework outfit represents who I am and what I love. I'm very girly but in a glam rock chick kind of way and I live in dresses. This outfit represents my style and personality; Rocking, glam, feminine, sweet and a little edgy. More importantly I feel confident and happy when I'm wearing it. I know everyone has those little parts that they wish they could change but City Chic is all about embracing what you love and rocking it! Be Bold, Be Sexy, Be Glam, Be Chic!

I would love to know; WHAT IS YOUR FIREWORK OUTFIT?

I hope you managed to get some gorgeous new gear from last weeks AMAZING sale on City Chic's website. If you missed out fear not, the sales start instore tomorrow. Look out Chermside, I'm coming!!

Sleeping Sexy with Courtney Maxwell and City Chic.

Courtney Maxwell, with City Chic, she is creating sexy sleepwear for the plus-size girl. LUCKY US! xxx.

I remember the first time I ever tried to buy some sort of sexy nightwear. It was so awkward. It was eleven years ago, I was about 20 and wanted something pretty and feminine to sleep in... It was not an easy thing to find. As a size 18/20 and quite a self conscious young thing - I went into a department store and felt the prickle of embarrassment as I wandered about, swooping through the racks - hoping I could find something big enough for my hips and breasts - but also - something youthful... In the end, I settled on a relatively shapeless blue slip. Soft to touch, but not particularly fitted... The slip DID feel nice against my skin but was relatively blah really.

When I heard that our amazing Face of City Chic, Courtney Maxwell was designing some nightwear, I was well excited. In a blog post in the lead up to Valentine's Day (when the first lot of sleepwear was released) the key points of the sleepwear were listed thus:
  • Supported bust area – double lined with encased elastic under the bust for full support
  • Shirring on the back of bust to fit all bust sizes and shapes
  • Washable – Easy to wash, Wash bag, often known as lingerie bag or delicates bag is recommended to keep your sleepwear looking brand new.
  • Diamante detail
  • Sexy and tasteful all in one
  • Fabric – Stretch satin to fit all shapes and sizes
  • All fabrications are designed to be figure flattering as they skim over the body to create a beautiful silhouette and are extremely comfortable to sleep in. I would know, I have tried them all out and my boyfriend loves them too!
I got two lots of sleepwear from the first collection -

I bought the Spotted Betty Cami Shorts Set first. I like wearing singlet tops and pants to bed, so this was an easy first choice for me. I was immediately struck by the comfort of the set, but also the care that had been taken in crafting the sleepwear and the softness of the fabrics. I bought the Sexy Lace Victoria Babydoll next.

Now. I don't care if you are single or coupled... feeling sexy is IMPORTANT. When you buy something like the Lace Victoria Babydoll, you buy it to feel feminine, to feel sexy. It works. Not only do I like wearing this for myself to help remind me what a gorgeous woman I am, but I loved being able to pull it out and wear it on a mini-break with my Mr. Darcy. As a part of a very stable couple - I LIKE that I can take his breath away.

My current favourites from the NEW(!!) Sleepwear Collection by Courtney Maxwell for City Chic are below:

The Animal Sleepwear Set is a no-brainer. I told you! I LOVE singlet top/pant combinations to sleep in and this beats an old pair of tracky-dacks any day! Also - because I know how soft the material will be, I am certainly getting my hands on this one! The next piece I LOVE is the Antique Lace Shrug. What a phenomenal piece. I don't mind my arms, but do like a little shoulder/underarm coverage. I LOVE that I could slip on a sexy nightie, pop on this shrug and sit, feeling totally confident and sexy and watch TV, or eat a romantic dinner, or talk in candlelight. This is such a thought-out piece - and I will go odds on, I need to buy two... one for the bedroom and one for the streets of London. This Antique Lace Shrug is VERSATILE. I need it for home and I need it for going out. LOVE.

Finally - I want the Black Lace Slip Courtney is wearing with the shrug in the image above. I mean - I like feeling sexy. On my own, there is nothing quite like a warm shower, exfoliation, body butter, clean sheets and soft fabric on my skin. And. Well...

I do like to take Mr. Darcy's breath away.

(By the way - you do know everything on the Aussie site is 50% off until the 31st, right? You better get shopping!)

Hot Buy: The Denim Hoody

The City Chic Denim Hoody takes a classic piece, the denim jacket, and gives it a new street edge by adding soft sweater sleeves and hood in grey marl. Reminiscent of the now cult item status Alexander Wang denim hoody worn by celebrities and fashionistas alike this piece is a must buy for the colder months ahead so you can stay both stylish and warm.

Rihanna was one such celebrity who loves her Alexander Wang denim and black sweater hooded jacket. Worked it best with her skinny jeans and black leather boots you too can REPLICATE THIS LOOK. How? Like this:

City Chic Denim Hoody PLUS +
City Chic Embroidered Skinny Leg Jean: Skinny jeans are a staple in every girls wardrobe, but these add something special by adding embroidery.
City Chic Sequin Arrow Chiffon Top: Sparkle = sexy.
City Chic Buckle Heel Boots: Make like Rihanna and boot up.
City Chic Bling Ring Band: for some bling bling.

The recent Australian Fashion Week show by Stolen Girlfriends Club inspired me to think of another way to wear this fabulous piece, a more modern goth vibe mixing other trends in leather and sheer fabrics

Sitting front row I got some great photos of the looks, love the leather panelling on the jeans.

City Chic Denim Hoody PLUS +
City Chic Vinyl Splice Leggings: Get the leather look for less with this vinyl splice sexy leggings.
City Chic Sheer Blouse With Sweetheart Neckline: A little bit rockabilly and very sexy this blouse is perfect for this tough street look. The a-line hem will flatter any tummy issues you may have - bonus!
City Chic Black Daisy Necklace: Daisy's are oh so 90's, channel style icon of the period Drew Barrymore with this statement piece.
Creepers: The biggest shoe trend right now, Stolen Girlfriend Club showcased many styles of creepers in their RAFW runway show. A mix of rockabilly and punk styling, its the ultimate street edge shoe.

Trend Alert: Creepers

Backstage at Stolen Girlfriends Club I snapped this great photo of all the amazing shoes to be used during the show, of which creepers featured prominently.

The always amazingly dressed Meg Gray, Fashion Editor of Vogue Australia, wore her Prada creepers most days during fashion week. And why not? They are freaking awesome, as is her bright pink hair. Also, yes even Prada have released creepers!

Here I am in my own creepers. Mine aren't really high enough, but have the creeper look and are in that awesome cobalt blue. I wore mine with my City Chic sheer maxi dress with a matching to my shoes by chance cobalt blue shirt dress by my friends label Limedrop who showed at RAFW. Adding in studded details like my belt and bag gave the look a more punk street edge which is what I was going for.

What are your thoughts on creepers? Ugly or Awesome let me know below.

Katy Perry - Brisbane

It is almost 1AM and I have just arrived home after seeing Katy Perry at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre. As you all know I have been waiting for this show for what seems like ages and could not wait for the day to arrive. I constantly 'youtubed' the California Dreams Tour and my expectations were extremely high!

We entered the 'Arena' and were greeted with the smell of Cotton Candy. A video started Katy's performance, this introduced the theme of the show a Candy Wonderland is the best way to describe it. The stage was filled with lolly and cupcake sets. Katy rose up on a platform and 'Teenage Dream' began. The crowd went crazy, the song raised the bar exceptionally high and I knew we were in for a fantastic show! Hit after hit followed; "Waking up in Vegas", "Hummingbird Heartbeat", "I kissed a girl", "Hot n Cold" were absolutely amazing! During the middle of the set things went a little mellow. Katy and her band were onstage in front of a curtain backdrop and she entertained us with covers of Rihannas "Only Girl In The World", Willow Smith "Whip My Hair" and, Rebecca Black "Friday" Katy had the crowd eating out of the palm of her hand! Ms Perry (or should I say Mrs Brand) then donned a sparkling acoustic guitar and performed "Thinking of You" which left me speechless, I think I had a few tears in my eyes any doubt in her vocal ability anyone in the crowd would have had would have left as soon as she sang that song. "Thank God It's Friday" followed before launching into "Firework" which sent the crowd into a frenzy, what an amazing song, they even had fireworks onstage! Katy came onstage with her Cat "Kitty Purry" and performed a crazy fun cover of "I wanna dance with somebody". Closing song "California Gurls" had absolutely everyone on their feet for one last party song! Confetti in the shapes of hearts and candy covered us as Katy finished off the party.

Words really can't describe how much fun the concert was. I honestly don't think I have ever had such a great time at a concert. Performance wise while it was entertaining it wasn't the best I have seen but the costumes, the dancers and the incredible stage set up more than made up for it. It was also really refreshing to see how well Katy interacted with the crowd, she is no diva! She was cracking jokes all through the night and was very appreciative of all the people who had came to see her. I am so happy I got the chance to go to the final Australian performance for Katy's California Dreams Tour. It was a fantastic night and when she returns to Aus I would highly recommend buying a ticket to see her! You will have the time of your life.

I decided to dress up as 'Kitty Purry' for the show and City Chic's Animal Print Kaftan was a perfect match for my leopard ears. The Kaftan is so comfortable it is one of my favorite pieces!

Are you ladies loving City Chic's latest line Midnight Vixen? There are a number of pieces which need to find themselves into my wardrobe ASAP. Also how cute and sexy is Courtney's latest sleepwear range, I am lusting over the Animal Sleepwear Set. It looks adorable! Remember to stay connected to all things City Chic keep an eye on the Facebook page and this blog.

Pin-Ups and Prada.

I love being a woman. LOVE it. I feel so lucky too, to feel good about myself and feel empowered as a female. Recently, my bestie (Bex - who I ALWAYS talk about here!) was really generous and gave me a pair of Prada Sunglasses. Do you know what they match perfectly?

My City Chic Dotted Pin-Up dress circa 2007! I absolutely LOVE this dress. It is made with a heavy cotton and has a lovely drape on it. You know those clothes you just don't wear often enough, and then - as you pull them out of your closet, your head starts nodding and your brain keeps going - YES...!

THIS is one of those dresses for me.

You can see that I have teamed this dress with my boots, favourite City Chic lace bolero, train track background and a little piece of Prada. I love this look and as the UK heads FAST towards summer, I plan to rock these glasses and a lot more vintage styling.

What is your favourite look for your coming season? Personally, I am loving that I can STILL get away with wearing my Military Pleather Jacket. I LOVE it and will pop it in the next post. The pleather is soft and the jacket fits like a dream... one things I can say about the UK - you pretty much always need a jacket!

Trend Report: Australian Fashion Week

This week is Rosemount Australian Fashion Week in Sydney and I'm attending the shows as an invited delegate. Its a hectic jam packed schedule of shows from 9am to 8:30pm all week with no time for a break in between. Before I head off to day two of fashion week I thought I might fill you all in on some noticeable trends that we witnessed yesterday.

White Hot

White looks set to be a big trend for Spring/Summer 2011 with every collection thus far showing a few all white pieces. Very fresh and clean I'm excited about this trend.

Colour Block

Dressing head to toe in the one colour with no print to be seen is another trend that has emerged from the shows. To spice it up you can add pops of contrasting colour with accessories.

Fuchsia

Pink is the new black it seems with fuchsia making its mark in nearly every collection. Again no print to be seen, designers this year seem to have taken a step back to minimalism only in brights and whites.

Flat Shoes

Ladies you can rejoice as there has barely been a heel to be seen on this years runways. Instead we have seen a variety of muted tone flats from pastel oxfords to a simple tonal two strap sandal.

Inspired by; Amandah Wilkinson

Amandah Wilkinson is the frontwoman of Queensland band Operator Please. I have always been a fan of Operator Please and Amandah, I bought one of their first EP's and first saw them live in 2007 just before I turned 18. I found it really inspiring that they were so successful and so talented at such a young age. Amandah and her bandmates are extremely talented, the first time I saw them live I was amazed, they are so full of energy and make every performance seem like a giant party. I always admired Amandah not only because she is a female frontwoman but also because she has a very realistic body shape. When Operator Please and I became "friends" on Facebook I decided to send Amandah a quick message to see if she would be interested in talking to me for a blog post and luckily for me she said yes!

You have inspired many women who want to be part of the Music Industry (including myself) by being a female frontwoman and also by having a healthy and realistic body image. How do you feel about this?
I'm just a normal person that makes music. I think that's perhaps what people tend to forget. Musicians are everyday people. If I've inspired at least one person to chase what they want then I'm happy. I don't consider myself a role model but I do believe in being yourself.

As a curvier woman in the Music Industry have you ever felt pressure to look a certain way from managers and labels?
It's not managers and labels it's more everything else around you, which then turns into internal pressure. I think sometimes you tend to make comparisons to other people and then you have to sit back and remember that you're not them.

I'm not sure if you are aware but recently City Chic made fashion history when they became the first Plus Sized label to walk on the catwalk as part of the Loreal Melbourne Fashion Festival. Have you noticed that plus sized fashion and a more realistic body image are being promoted in a more positive way and accepted more within the public?
I think in recent times yes. It's just a shame that it even had to get to this point where a realistic body image wasn't even seen and that women in particular at times have been made to feel alienated by the single aesthetic that is seen everywhere. I think there are two ways to look at it though - you can either choose to be heavily influenced by what is put in front of you and what can be seen in the media OR you can do your own thing. The more emphasis we put on it, the more noticeable it becomes.

Whenever I think of your style I think of cute black clothes with brightly colored crazy accessories and make up. How would you describe your style and take on Fashion?
The best way to describe my style is minimalist with accessories. I like to keep the bases simple. For instance I will have a dress and build accessories on the shoulders. I am all about the shoulders. I wear a lot of vintage pieces as well, mainly for the cut of things. My sister makes all of my accessories as well - so we really get to experiment with it all. My take on fashion is very "keep it simple" - with things built on.

Lastly Amandah who or what are you inspired by stylewise?
People always laugh when I tell them my fashion inspiration. But here goes: Peggy Bundy from "Married With Children" - I love the big hair, the big eyes, she wears a lot of spandex and high waisted pieces. My next one is Nanny Fine from "The Nanny" - I think the way her outfits and accessories are matched is definitely something to aspire to. My last ones are Grace Jones & Annie Lennox of "Eurythmics" - both women were able to walk the androgynous line. Both women had the amazing ability to look feminine whilst dressed in clothing that was masculine. They had the suites down to a T - And the shape of the shoulders in a lot of their outfits have been my favourite. Emphasis on the shoulders!

Amandah's fashion motto is 'keep it simple' - with things built on. For an Amandah inspired by look I have started with the Military Bead Shoulder Dress I know Amandah has said that she is a big fan of emphasis on the shoulders but I also know that many of the City Chic ladies are a little conscious of big shoulder accessories. The Military Bead dress is the perfect starting point it has some detail on the shoulders but is still simple enough for you to use as your 'canvas'. The Pleather Trim Leggings add a subtle but quirky touch. I adore these shoes they stick to the all black theme of the outfit but add a touch of cute. Adding the Military Glam Necklace breaks up the black outfit and adds a touch of quirkiness. Adding a slick of bright pink lipstick helps to give a pop of color and will ensure you command attention. Apply some sparkly eyeshadow to give your eyes a subtle Peggy Bundy look. Finish your outfit with a coat of nailpolish to match your lipstick and you are ready! When creating my 'Amandah Wilkinson Inspired by outfit' I wanted to take onboard the way Amandah described her style but also put my own spin on it. The dress is very versatile you can wear it almost anywhere. For me I would wear this outfit out clubbing with the girls or even to a concert (maybe I should wear a similar outfit next time I see Operator Please?).

Welcome to Polyvore!

I would like to thank Amandah for taking the time to answer my questions and for being so friendly. To keep up to date with all things Operator Please make sure you sign up to their Newsletter via the official site. As always, to stay connected to all things City Chic make sure you keep an eye on the Facebook Page and this blog. In two weeks time I am finally going to see Katy Perry at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, I almost can't contain my excitement! I will be back to tell you all about the show and post some photos.

Until Next Time,
